About us

We’re Matt & Millie, founders of äyup. What started as a Hinge match in May 2025 quickly turned into something a little… hotter.

By August 2025, we’d committed ourselves to a slightly mad idea: turning a humble horse box into a roaming sauna, bringing warmth, wellbeing and a bit of magic to the places we love most.

This sauna is a mix of our personalities, passions, and a belief that slowing down (preferably somewhere beautiful) is always a good idea.

A man and a woman standing inside the back of a moving truck, smiling at the camera.

What’s on offer

A woman in a swimsuit using a sauna stove with stones inside a wooden sauna room.
A metal planter on a patch of grass with a black mat underneath. In the background are trees, a wooden shed, and a cloudy sky.

Proper wood-fired heat, proper Yorkshire views. Our 50-minute social sessions run on the hour, every hour, on select days - with six guests max, so it never feels crowded.

Settle in, let the stove do its thing, gaze out over our gorgeous views of the Chevin, then brave our Urban Ice Tribe cold plunge or the wild shower when you're ready to cool down.

The bit before you book:

We know, we know - nobody comes to a sauna website for the small print. But a wood-fired sauna and a cold plunge come with a few things worth knowing before you turn up in your swimmers.

Have a read through the sections below. They cover how we run sessions, who shouldn't use the sauna without checking with a GP first, what to bring, and how to stay safe once you're in.

Booking a session means you - and anyone you're booking in alongside you - are happy with it all.

Any questions before you commit, drop us a line at ayup@ayupsauna.co.uk.

  • The äyup sauna is wood-fired and reaches extremely high temperatures. To ensure your safety and the comfort of others, please follow proper sauna etiquette at all times.

    Before Entering the Sauna

    • Shower or rinse before entering. This keeps the sauna hygienic and prepares your body by opening your pores.

    • Stay well-hydrated. Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your sauna session. Use a non-metal and non-glass bottle.

    • Remove all jewellery to avoid burns – metal heats quickly in the sauna.

    • Remove contact lenses and glasses to prevent damage from the heat.

    • Remove shoes and wash your feet in the bucket provided before entering.

    • Bring a towel to sit on for hygiene and comfort.

    Inside the Sauna

    • DO NOT touch the stove, stove door, chimney flue, sauna rocks, or surrounding fire guards. They are extremely hot and will cause serious burns.

    • The wood-burning stove is operated STRICTLY by äyup sauna staff only. If you would like to adjust the temperature or add wood, please ask.

    • Enter and exit carefully, always closing the door behind you to maintain temperature.

    • Sit on your towel at all times for hygiene.

    • Limit your time to a maximum of 20 minutes inside per session, unless you are an experienced sauna user. We recommend 10-15 minute sessions, especially for beginners.

    • Swimwear must be worn at all times – nudity is not permitted.

    • Be respectful of others' space and privacy. Keep conversations quiet.

    • No phones or gadgets in the sauna – disconnect and enjoy the experience.

    • Keep access points clear to allow others to exit safely.

    • Do not add your own essential oils or products to the stove or anywhere in the sauna.

    • If you feel unwell, dizzy, lightheaded, or uncomfortable, leave the sauna immediately.

Pouring Water on the Rocks (Löyly)

    • Always check with other bathers before pouring water – some prefer a drier heat.

    • Pour water slowly using the ladle provided.

    • Start from the rocks furthest away from you to avoid being scalded by the steam.

    • Do not pour more than a few ladles at one time as this can damage the heater.

    • Only use the water provided – never add oils or other substances.

    The Sauna Cycle

For the best experience, we recommend cycling between hot and cold:

    • Start with a 10-15 minute sauna session

    • Cool down with a cold plunge, shower, or simply step outside

    • Rest and rehydrate

    • Repeat 2-3 times for the full benefit

  • The cold plunge facilities are designed for cold water immersion therapy, offering a refreshing contrast to balance the heat of the sauna. While this can be beneficial, cold water immersion carries potential health risks including (but not limited to) hypothermia, shock, and injury.

Use of cold plunge facilities is entirely at your own risk.

    Before Using the Cold Plunge

    • Shower or rinse after the sauna before plunging. This prepares your body for the temperature change and keeps the water clean.

    • Check the temperature display if available. Water temperature will vary with the weather and may be extremely cold in winter.

    During the Cold Plunge

    • If you're new to cold water immersion, limit your time to 30 seconds to 2 minutes and gradually build up over multiple sessions.

    • Focus on your breathing – try to stay calm and controlled.

    • Listen to your body. It is not a competition.

    • Exit immediately (but slowly and carefully) if you: feel dizzy, start excessively shivering, experience extreme discomfort, feel unwell, or have difficulty breathing.

    Safety Tips

    • Enter and exit with care using any steps, ladders, or non-slip matting provided.

    • If using the cold plunge, ensure you can handle cold temperatures.

    • Never plunge alone – always ensure someone is nearby.

    • Feel free to wear a woolly hat in winter months to keep your head warm!

    • After plunging, dry off and warm up gradually. Have warm clothes ready.

    After Your Session

    • Drink plenty of water to rehydrate

    • Allow your body to cool down and relax

    • Eat something salty – you'll need it after all that sweating!

    • Take your time before driving – let your body fully recover

  • What to Bring

    • Swimwear (without metal fastenings)

    • Two towels (one for sitting on in the sauna, one for drying off)

    • Flip-flops or sliders

    • A water bottle (non-glass, non-metal)

    • Warm clothes for afterwards (especially in cooler weather)
